Modern transmission
systems tend to operate closer to their stability and thermal limits due to
increase in power delivery. Hence it is desirable to estimate the effect
of contingencies and plan suitable measures to improve system
security/stability. This paper deals with the identification of optimal
location for UPFC (Unified Power Flow Controller) placement in power systems
after evaluating the severity of the contingencies. Composite-criteria based
severity index approach is described to rank the transmission lines and a set
of most severe contingent lines in the given system are found. This approach of
contingency ranking eliminates masking effect. For
identifying the optimal location of UPFC, voltage-stability L index of load
buses has been used as the basis for improved system security/stability. The proposed method is tested on standard IEEE 30
bus system.
